Current and Long-term Work Trends Among Older Americans

About

Last year, a resource was published on this Community of Practice that examined labor market trends among older Americans (55 and older) in some detail, including employment and unemployment data.

That resource has now been updated with data through 2023, and charts and several tables have been added to make the trends easier to understand.

Work trends among older individuals vary the most depending upon age bracket and gender.  Therefore, to separate out the impact of these factors, this updated report studies narrow 5-year age brackets (except for those 75 and older), and the differences between women and men (which have narrowed considerably over time).  Because the last report examined the detailed labor force and unemployment patterns not that long ago, and not enough time and change has occurred to alter conclusions about these topics, this new narrative focuses exclusively on the employment-to-population ratio (referred to as the employment rate, for convenience).  However, the attached spreadsheets update all the unemployment and labor force participation rate data through 2023 and include age groups not discussed in the new report (such as all those 55 and older, and 65 and older).
