The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is a key player in assisting people with disabilities in finding meaningful work and succeeding in their roles. The DOL not only advises employers on effective strategies for recruiting and retaining qualified people with disabilities, but also educates federal agencies and contractors about their obligations related to affirmative action and nondiscrimination in hiring.
- Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) promotes policies and coordinates with employers and all levels of government to increase workplace success for people with disabilities.
- Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) shares enforcement authority for Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. OFCCP also enforces Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management, Civil Rights Center (CRC) enforces several federal disability nondiscrimination laws, including Title II of the ADA, Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and laws that apply to recipients of financial assistance under Title I of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).
- Employment and Training Administration (ETA) provides grants and other services that offer job search assistance, provide supportive employment services and job training and connect employers with skilled workers.
- Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion (EARN) helps employers, human resources professionals, and diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) staff find the resources to recruit, hire, retain, and advance people with disabilities. AskEARN.org offers a variety of resources to assist employers, including state and federal government agencies, in making their workforce more inclusive and reflective of the citizens they serve and meeting their DEIA goals.
- Job Accommodation Network (JAN) provides free, expert, and confidential guidance on job accommodations and disability employment issues. JAN offers free one-on-one practical guidance and technical assistance on job accommodation solutions, Title I of the ADA and related legislation, and self-employment and entrepreneurship options for people with disabilities.
- Need workplace accommodation inspiration? JAN and ODEP offer a new Situations and Solutions Finder with examples of workplace accommodations in many industries and a free database of accommodation scenarios by disability, limitation, or occupation.
- The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) connects employers nationwide with college students, graduate students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to demonstrate their abilities in the workplace through internships or permanent jobs.
